In some California Metro,i.e. LA, Bay areas, there are free highway tow services if you broke down. This service is supported by a charged incurred in your registration. Basically, people don't want you to block the roadway during the rush hour, and the service is only to get your car off the freeway. However,you always can ask AAA to tow your car. When I had my AAA Plus, I once used it to get my car towed about 150+ miles by calling tow trucks twice; because 100 miles was the limit for one call.
