Don't take GPS as your essential tool. It is dangerous if

you totally rely on it. When it is out of signal or battery in the middle of nowhere, you are dead. Learn to use map and compass to find a way. I do lot of day or overnight hikings and never go a trail without a map.

Besides, use pointer watch instead of digital watch while you are in a field. At least it is another tool to help you to find right direction.
