I stopped by the chena hot springs resort when I was in Fairbanks during early September. Actually it is not bad. It looks like a place to relax. They offer variety of accommodations from camps, cabins to inn-like. But camps and cabins do not have in-house bathroom or even no tap water. The resort offers many guided outdoor activities.

It takes about one hour to the resort from Fairbanks.

To see the northern lights, you don't have to go to Fairbanks. You can go anywhere but avoid city lights. The best time to see is around 12-2am. I saw northern lights even in Seward in September. I suggest you may stay in cabins near Denali NP. There are plenty. Some of them are very nice and very unique.
