It is much easier to say "Can you understand?", just like it is much easier for me to say, "Je ne comprend Francaise, S'il vous parlez vite." In reality, if he continues in French, I would understand NOTHING. :-)

That is why we found pen and paper - the "ancient" tools, actually are helpful in situation like this.
