开车需要问路时很麻烦 - Agree. We rely on pen/paper.

Even they know English and are willing to talk in English, they are not fluent. In small villages and towns, hardly anyone can speak English well enough to give you direction.

GPS helps some. But when it comes to country roads, still have to use pen and paper to draw simple map & direction.

Occasionally we would bump at someone who would tell us to follow his car and led us to the right "intersection" and told us which way to turn.
