In addition to visa, you need a permit to enter
Tibet. I forgot to mention that.

The road from Sichuan to Lhasa is very bumpy and
often shut due to frequent mudslide, it could take
days or even weeks to repair that you could get
stuck in the middle. Three years ago, I heard that
the road to Tibet were closed for 2-3 weeks, then
I took the Qinghai-Tibet highway, from Ge-Er-Mu(sp?)
to Lhasa crossing TangGuLaShan pass.

So, check the road condition before you go, should
be a very rewarding trip from Sichuan to Tibet.
