Yet there had been such a unmistakable feeling since I was a youthful reader. 

Somehow modern western literature has this issue too, but slightly different, in that they treat it like some form of new esthetics (which I personally disapprove), and seem to know what they are doing, while Chinese writers ttreat it as an ideal and some standard after which they model their works.
