Highway 99

 

I hike along highway ninety-nine,

on a journey to the true love of mine.

I want to measure the distance to my destination,

but ticks of mile markers only measure my frustration.

From sunrise to moonrise above the skyline,

I’m thirty-three miles closer to my love shrine. 

From a desert to a lake-side gas station,

I’m sixty-six miles closer to my elation. 

When snow eventually melts in sunshine,

I’m ninety-nine miles closer to sip my love’s straw wine. 

When wind and dust paint my hairs gray,

I wonder whether my lust leads me astray.
