  The walls of the little room in which we are sitting are crammed with photographs. Every branch of the family is represented, it is like a crosssection of the Indian empire. For the most part the members of this genealogical tree look like withered leaves: the women are frail and they have a startled, frightened look in their eyes: the men have a keen, intelligent look, like educated chimpanzees. 

  They are all there, about ninety of them, with their white bullocks, their dung-cakes, their skinny legs, their old-fashioned spectacles; in the background, now and then, one catches a glimpse of the parched soil, of a crumbling pediment, of an idol with crooked arms, a sort of human centipede. There is something so fantastic, so incongruous about this gallery that one is reminded inevitably of the great spawn of temples which stretch from the Himalayas to the tip of Ceylon, a vast jumble of architecture, staggering in beauty and at the same time monstrous, hideously monstrous because the fecundity which seethes and ferments in the myriad ramifications of design seems to have exhausted the very soil of India itself.

        在我们就座的小房间墙壁之上，贴满了大大小小的照片。这个家族开的每条枝，散的每片叶，都聚集在此一一呈现，活像一整个印度国的剖面图。最让我注意到的，是这棵基因大树上的所有成员都像一片片萎谢的树叶。女人们看上去体虚气弱，眼睛之中总有那种受到惊吓，惧怕不已的神态。而男人们总是摆出一副急切又热烈，聪明又机灵的样子，就像受过高等教育的黑猩猩（点评：哈哈，对老印们尖酸刻薄的评价，服！）。

        他们都在那儿呢，合计有九十之多，还有他们的白毛神牛，以及用牛粪团成的巨大草饼，他们的腿儿细成了麻杆，鼻梁上架着曾经流行，现在过时了的那种老式眼镜。背景之中，要是仔细一看的话，时不时你就能瞄到一片枯黄的土地，一顶塌落的三角牌楼，一个胳膊奇形怪状的可爱神像（点评：可能类似于千手观音，三头六臂哪吒，大话西游白晶晶，蝎子王等那种风格的造型。），嗯。。。有点类似人头蜈蚣的那种感觉。这其中一些东西是那么的奇幻，跟整个画面是那么的格格不入，以至于看的人不可避免就会被提醒，想到那一座座寺庙鳞次栉比，密如鱼产下的卵（点评：这个比喻太犀利，文明古国的人繁殖能力都很强。其实儒释道的本尊，释迦牟尼，孔孟，老庄都不在乎生育。不过印度教的大梵天是心生子，心里想一想就能生子，维基说有30多个，而“慌乱神”诞生于梵天的肛门。这个就。。。），从喜马拉雅山顶一直延伸到海边斯里兰卡岛的南端，这真是各种人工建筑争奇斗艳，你横我竖，你站我躺的精英荟萃大拼盘。这些建筑身形跌跌晃晃，颤颤悠悠，大胆展现着自己的自豪与美丽，与此同时又状若阴间鬼魅——是那种极丑无比的鬼魅。可能有人气愤，为什么我有胆这样大放厥词？因为我觉得他们让自己的创造能力不断沸腾，不断发酵，成就出了万万千千诸如此类的设计装潢成果，但是结的果呢，却是让印度这块神奇古老的土地，内在的精气真元消耗殆尽，从此再无创意（点评：哈哈，骂得有创意。亨利米勒虽然在此处骂了古老的文化，但是看完全书，就会发现他是尊崇古老文化，希望内心回归原本的人。原因在于他反感现在的那些扛着古老文化的牌坊，但是心里并不尊敬，生活中背道而驰的家伙，此处是移民到法国的一个印度房东，嘴上很有礼貌客客气气，但是骨子里精打细算，习惯蹭人便宜。修建一座座寺庙，本意让世人修行身心，结果后人只是五体投地，闭眼拜服佛祖而已，心不修，身更不修。）。
