"The Beguiled" was based on Thomas Cullinan's 1966 novel (originally titled A Painted Devil), which was about a kind of Freudian sex fantasy against the historical background of the American Civil War and the struggle of slaves yearning for freedom. No Chinese titles did justice to the film.
