speak Chinese. He learned Tang poetry from English-speaking Japanese. Lo and behold, he came up with a thin volume of Cathay (China), introducing Li Bai's works to the West through his own interpretation and imagination. He enjoyed a resounding success. His "reinvented" Tang poetry really impressed the American literati of the 1920s.
