i think as a couple, you two should talk about it together and make the decision together, especially for some luxurious expenditures.

maybe you two can sit down and make a plan together - how much savings you are aiming at, the time frame for the goal, how much percentage each of you can spend on your personal interests, at what time to spend money on something big like an expensive handbag.

use more reasoning, rather than arguing.
