No you need have to be AT&T customer

I bought one in July for a friend in China, just went to Apple store, told told that I wanted the iphone without the contract, just paid and that's it. Of course the store people will tell you to go to AT&T to get it unlocked, but if it's for using in China, you don't have to do that.
