Curious question: Do american wash hands before eating?

I am not here to judge people. But this question has bothered me so long. I don't think most American wash hands before eating when they eat out. Maybe I don't pay enough attention? Maybe this is the question for the 跨国婚姻. But I am afraid I will get stoned.

About the bathroom, I once read an article, suggest women clean items in their bags more ofen, e.g., powder case, cell phone. It is said those items have far more germ counts than the toilet seat! HA! I guess the cleaness of bag and of the bathroom are not so differnt after all. Joking.
