There is no such thing as "desperate" at poly level. Whoever you talk to in the Schools, HR will still be very pragmatic about hiring.

If they don't have staff in a certain area, current staff will be expected to "spearhead" the new direction. It's not like uni, where certain staff are experts in their field. They also hire a lot of young, junior staff, as well as foreign staff from "developing" (cheap) countries, who are cheap and willing to do what they are told.

Things change every couple of years, as the govt brings out new initiatives at a rapid pace, so all staff are expected to be adaptable (actually a good thing, since it stops you from getting in a rut).

The salary scale is rigid, depending on qualifications and experience. Doctorates are good, but not necessary, and not taken into account in determining salary (like I said, salary scale rules are rigid, being part of govt policy).

At best, you may be "promised" fast-track promotion to managerial level after a while, but this is not guaranteed.

With 8 years experience, you'll probably be offered mid-to-top end of grade 4, which is about S$4500 or so a month (if I remember - better to check the scale grades yourself).

The top of grade 3 is about $7000 per month, and it's VERY hard to get past that. Many older staff get stuck at the top of grade 3 for many years, with no annual increments.

Don't forget, though, especially if you have a family, that you'll have 42 days' leave - something that more money can't buy.
