AS if being the least emotional nation in the world was not enough, Singapore has claimed yet another title: we are the most unhappy one as well.
That’s according to international pollster Gallup, at least.
Based on a poll of nearly 150,000 people worldwide conducted last year – the same one that branded Singapore as emotionless – Gallup’s reading into the results put Singapore at the top of the list of countries where the fewest adults experienced positive emotions.
Singaporeans were apparently less upbeat than the people in places like Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan and Haiti.
People were asked whether they experienced a lot of enjoyment the day before the survey and whether they felt respected, well-rested, laughed and smiled a lot, and did or learned something interesting. And while 50% of people in war-torn Iraq did, only 46% of Singaporeans could summon up the same amount of optimism.
Just last month, Gallup had released report showing “Singaporeans are the least likely in the world to report experiencing emotions of any kind on a daily basis”.
These polls have been a part of Gallup’s attempt to measure the “human condition” in countries, as opposed to economic indicators.
Many of the countries which posted high rankings in positive emotions have typically done poorly in traditional measures of national well-being.
