Singapore scores in quality of life in brand poll

SINGAPOREANS have been hailed as having the best quality of life in Asia and eighth-best in the world, according a recent research study.

This is due to factors such as its strong public school system and high standard of universities, as well as being among the top-ranked by respondents for job opportunities.

The 2010 Country Brand Index was compiled by global brand consultancy FutureBrand in partnership with British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World News. The study, which assessed 110 countries, is now in its sixth year.

Singapore also emerged tops in being the safest country in Asia, with Switzerland and countries in Scandinavia making up the top five globally.

As a country brand, Singapore was the second strongest in Asia, behind Japan, and ranked 15th globally.

The strength of a country brand is determined by factors including level of awareness, familiarity, preference and advocacy. Canada, Australia and New Zealand were the top three country brands internationally.

In a statement, FutureBrand attributed Singapore's strong showing as a country respondents would "most like to live in" to its excellence in several categories. For instance, it is viewed as a great place to work on the basis of technology, a strong infrastructure and a skilled workforce.

It was also placed second after global leader Japan as the country in Asia with the most advanced technology. It ranked seventh in the same category on an international level. In terms of attracting investment, Singapore ranked second globally, behind Switzerland, for its powerful investment climate.

The survey also showed that Singapore has the 10th-most-skilled workforce in the world, and the second strongest in Asia. The Lion City ranked seventh globally and second in Asia - behind the United Arab Emirates - for job opportunities.

In the retail sector, Singapore proved its mettle as a shopping haven, clinching sixth place globally and second in Asia, after China.

The study also pitted Singapore's favourite pastime of eating against other countries in the world. It came in fifth for food tourism, behind Italy, Japan, France and Thailand.
