I just came bak from the Anza Burrego Disert State Park and had a different feeling about this park from yours.

I went to the visitor center first. There are three different slide shows(4 seasons in the disert, flowers in the disert, forgot the third one), 15 min long for each one. They are very informative and you will have a better idea how to explore this isolated disert.

Cut it short. It is famous for the seasonal blooming of disert flowers from Feb to March every year depending on the right combinations of water and temperature. It is also good for bighorn sheep watching. They have variety of trails for hiking. Unpaved roads can be very challenge even for 4 wheel drive cars and are the only way to get to the scenic points.

It is true that there are NOT many options if you only drive through along the paved roads. But the badland outlook along S2 road is very impressive.

In the park, they have many camping choices, ranger guided tours if you want some deeper appreciations of "the other kind of disert" (their words).
