I happen to know this little bit..

years ago, boys always outperform girls. In the age of "女权运动“，school changed the way kids learn. They adapted more teaching methods that is feasible for girls (leacture, girls will sit and listen, boys learn better when hands on), slowly girls are passing boys.

Again, this is political correctness.
