My friend think I should not open the Christmas present

My friend thinks I should wait for him to hand the Christmas present to me although he put the gift under the Chrismas

tree. He thinks it is selfish and rude that I opened the Christmas present myself in the morning of Christmas Day. I would like to check if this is an American tradition.
