does not make any sense.  if students apply for more schools, they will have better chance to get accepted by one of them.  they are not only compete among students form same school, they are competing with all the students applying for that college.  why the private school care about thier acceptance rate as # of accepted/# of applied, all  they care is # of students accepted in ivy/ # of their total students.
