D300 has a lot better ISO noise with Nikon's top of the line focus system.

If you get a D300, you are really getting a D2 series camera which formerly sells for $4000 and with better ISO noise. So for $500 more (assuming you are that lucky all the time), you turn your camera to be worth close to $3000 more, at least 400% return on your inverstment.
