D40 is pretty good for now, more AF-S lens will be available

but if you get the Nikon 17-55, you have the one of the ultimate lens, that doesn't need to be upgraded.

on the other hand the Sigma 50-150 is compatible with D40 at half the cost of 17-55, just a little longer, but for big indoor or outdoor, it's a remarkable lens considering the price.
