 猫是捕猎动物，可以在野外打野食生存。不像狗，是腐食动物，依赖人类生存。根据统计，野生的猫，因为环境因素（疾病，被其他野生动物伤害或者车祸等）平均寿命大约4.7年，也有2-8年的。放养了，比在shelter里没人领养而被人道处理要强。

统计显示，美国shelter里每年被人道处理的猫狗总计, 2008年，3.7 million. 56 percent of dogs and 71 percent of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized
