Their relationships have to be judged in the historical context and in the context of international relationship particularly between the Soviet Union and China and not to ignore the rightist attack internally. What Peng said privately and publicly didn’t help his relationship with Mao either. To say one is harsh and cruel and the other is innocent is a complete ignorance of the historical fact.
I think Mao was still "protective " of Peng after the Lushan. Did Mao change his attitude towards Peng in the Cultural Revolution? It appeared so. But can't say for sure.
