"But UC admissions officers say that reviewers are blocked from seeing the name, race, ethnicity and gender of applicants to avoid bias"-I am an external application reader for a UC campus and this is only partially true.
No, there is not a "race" box but we DO see the name of the applicant and from that can typically tell if the person is male or female. As for race, that can also sometimes be determined, either from last name or from extracurriculars (Black Student Union, Hispanic Honors Society, etc.)
While we, as readers, are instructed not to take race into consideration, I do not know what happens when we send our rated applications to the committee which makes the decisions as to who to accept. But I am pretty sure the committee receives the applications in the same way we do-with names and extracurricular activities visible.
For the first time this year, there was anti-bias training for the external readers. It was confusing because the process is supposed to be color-blind.
The fact is, the UCs have wanted to increase their proportion of certain races for a long time, but the disparities in standardized test scores made that difficult. With the coronavirus and the waiving of test scores, they can now accept more students who would have otherwise been shut out.
There is also the issue of which high school a student attended.
As someone who has worked with students at private, charter and public schools, there is a vast difference between earning an A at a school like Brentwood School and an A at a public Title 1 school.
Despite this, students at a low-income/diverse school with a 4.0 will be given priority over a student at a higher income (or private or charter) school with a 4.0.
