Homeowners can deduct property taxes and mortgage interest as an itemized deduction. Homeowners who don't have enough itemized deductions to exceed their standard deduction are better off using their standard deduction as that will result in the lowest federal income tax. 但在以前，你一旦用standard deduction，就无法减财产税了。

 

2008年有了新规定。

 

The Housing Assistance Tax Act of 2008 allows homeowners to claim an additional standard deduction for property tax if the taxpayer does not itemize. The additional amount is limited to $500 or $1,000 for joint filers.

 

具体做法：在税表1040的第40行，"Itemized deductions (From Schedule A) or standard deduction(see left margin)", 如果你不是Married filing jointly, 把你应该添入的数加$500，否则加$1000。（前题条件是你的2008年财产税超过了$500/人）

 

例如：色兄我2008年的财产税是$1900。我报税选择Married filing jointly，在税表1040的第40行，我应该填入$11900（$10900+1000）
