I don't think it is something surprising that female and male share apartement in US.
I shared apartment with a guy when I just came here because that was the only choice. Even though at least $300 per month was so expensive for us as I sometimes paid only $7 per month for food.
Nothing happened(I mean affair).
Actaully, we fought a lot of times even once we were so upset and almost used knife to kill each other. Those were mainly because of money and even just some stupid politicial or non-sense opinions on sth. Nothing was really big deal, but we were stressed out and needed someway to release the anger.
I am not sure about them. But I think sex doesn't have to be the only reason a man kill a woman.
