Two problems. One, I think you are confusing democracy

with the concept of human right as enbodied in "all men are created equal". Democracy necessarily leads to rule by the majority. If the majority of the American people still can't see beyond their racial/ethnic walls and are bent on taking care of "their own", demographic realities are bound to impact on the formation of the country's government. This, however, is not in contradiction to the principle of democracy. It is, however, in contradiction to those truths about human right that the Constitution holds to be self-evident.

Two, you have probably overestimated Mr. Obama's statesmanship. Obama hasn't given me any reason for believing that he is anything other than a politician. Where the American populace goes, so goes the politicians. It is simply the politicians' instinct of survival at work. Obama is no saint. From what I have seen, he is no better than Mrs. Clinton. Any social progress achieved in a democratic society must be a result of and follow some ideological progress amongst its people. I tend to think that to address such an open letter to Obama, thereby pinning the hope for reform on a politician, runs the risk of putting the cart before the horse.
