Discrimination is part of human nature. However, it can be changed for sure. First, to be friends, both sides must have same hobbies, similar options on most common matters. Second, to be good friends, both sides must have similar political view and same religion. It is difficult to find those common grand between a Chinese and American. On my experience, you can do two things to improve without kissing up:
1.Know and watch the popular sports, popular TV shows, and movies. Then you have something to talk. Most of Indian love to watch movies.
2. The political matters are big problem between Chinese and American. You need to learn some skills to persuade American to agree your options, at least partially. Most of Chinese don’t know the skill because we never got training from Chinese college. Whenever you meet this challenge, be patient and specking rationally. For example, many American asked me the question about single child policy after becoming a regular friend. I agreed with them because they only view the problem from freedom aspect. Then I told them the population problem in China and the impact on the world. Finally, I told them it is our Chinese to sacrifice their own freedom to save the world. Most of them agreed with me. Some of them said US should take similar policy.
this can be changed
