genetic mutation can facilitate adaptation

Was debating homosexual issue with a friend, who is a medical professional.  Genetic mutation can provide diversity of gene pool.  Sometimes seemingly harmful genes can combat another form of disease.  For example, people with sickle cell disease are very resistant to diabetes.
