The BBC reports that a trial has begun in China for five people who allegedly lured a student into selling his kidney to buy an iPad and an iPhone.
The teenager is in poor health, suffering renal failure, as a result of the surgery, according to the BBC report.
He had reportedly been promised about $35,000, but ultimately only received about $3,000.
His mom discovered the surgery after asking him where he got the money to buy the popular, but expensive, Apple /quotes/zigman/68270/quotes/nls/aaplAAPL-0.16% products.
A surgeon and four others face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
