SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — The tab for lunch with Warren Buffett: $3.46 million, not including tip.
An anonymous online bidder forked over a record $3,456,789 in an eBay auction to break bread with the famed investor. All proceeds of the annual charity event will be donated to the Glide Foundation, an organization that fights poverty and assists the homeless in the San Francisco area.
From the opening bid of $25,000, 106 bids were placed and 10 active bidders competed in the auction, which ended Friday evening. This year’s winning bid topped the 2011 high bid of $2,626,411.
The unidentified winner will dine with Buffett, the chairman and chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. /quotes/zigman/219651/quotes/nls/brk.a BRK.A +0.44% /quotes/zigman/583979/quotes/nls/brk.b BRK.B +0.59% , and up to seven guests at New York City’s Smith & Wollensky restaurant.
“We just had a most amazing, shocking experience occur in our great city,” said Rev. Cecil Williams, chief executive of the Glide Foundation, in a statement. “We are shouting, dancing, rejoicing and celebrating. It’s quite an experience. We have made history, thanks to Warren Buffett.”
Glide has auctioned the “Power Lunch with Warren Buffett” for the past 13 years. Including this year’s donation, the event has raised about $15 million for the charity group.
After winning the auction in both 2010 and 2011, Ted Weschler of Charlottesville, Va., received more than a couple of meals with Buffett. Last year, Weschler, a managing partner of hedge fund Peninsula Capital Advisors, became Berkshire’s newest investment manager.
Weschler, along with money manager Todd Combs and a possible third manager are expected to handle Berkshire’s entire portfolio when Buffett is no longer involved with the company.
