Statement by President Obama on the Situation in NYC

The United States opposes the use of violence against peaceful protesters in NYC, and we support the universal rights of the New York people. We have imposed sanctions on Mayor Bloomberg and his government. The European Union has imposed sanctions as well. We helped lead an effort at the UN Security Council to condemn NYPD’s actions. We have coordinated closely with allies and partners from the region and around the world. The Bloomberg government has now been condemned by countries in all parts of the globe, and can look only to Syria for support for its brutal and unjust crackdown.
