James Kent "Jimmy" Leeward (October 21, 1936[1] – September 16, 2011) was an American air racer, owner of the Leeward Air Ranch in Florida, and the pilot of the heavily modified P-51 Mustang racing aircraft "The Galloping Ghost airplane."[2]
He competed in air races in the United States from the 1970s through his death. Leeward was killed on September 16, 2011, when his aircraft went off course and crashed into the crowd at an air race in Reno, Nevada, killing at least 2 and injuring a number of spectators. It has been reported that it appeared he knew he was going to crash and tried as hard as he could to miss the stands.
Apart from being an experienced air racer, Jimmy Leeward also has several film credits[3] as a stunt pilot, actor, crew and himself.
