I agree with you on certain points. However, I do think NCE is a good book easily to follow and help you to build a solid foundation in pronunciation, intonation and vocabulary even it may be a little bit far from the daily life. I did attend Toastmaster but I quit and decided to go back to basics since I don't think I can go far with the weak foundation.

But again, people has the preferences doing their own study. Learning NCE will not prevent anybody from learning other good materials.
