Generally, my way to approach any things is:

Firstly, get a big picture: ideas, background, etc.

Secondly, get a little details, check the connection.
But, for the painting, Since I like color, I will spend time to look and think the design, background, fit, contrast, ... of colors.

then, look more details on the skill part...
