Agree! Never trying to remember rules. However, try to refer to rules during daily practice, as the rules will enhance learning.
Take an example, we might have heard the pronunciation of "mountain", "important" "keaten23", etc, in daily listening. When we say those words, we would pronounce the consonant "t" very clearly, however, most native americans don't pronounce the "t" sound, they use a glottal stop instead. We can find such instances even in VOA special English. When we know the rule of glottal stop, we will be easier to follow them and to imitate their pronunciation.
