Early Fall ( a case study on things lost in translation)

几天前我写了一首中文诗，可以作为一个很好的例子来说明有些东西是无法翻译的，或者说在翻译中必然会丢失的。它是下面这首七律。

 

【七律】初秋

 

四季轮回何日休，秋来心上使人愁。

黄衣孤树共田野，白鹭秋风升日头。

独苦方知茶里化，清欢还到月中游。

欲忘自我抬目望，云彩飘扬星汉流。

 

它的译文如下。

 

Early Fall

 

When will the cycle of the four seasons end?

As the Fall falls into my heart I feel melancholy.

 

A lone tree with yellow clothes shares the field

with a white egret, the autumn wind, and the rising sun.

 

Bitter loneliness is melt into my tea.

A visit to the moon gives me moonlight-clear joy.

 

How can I forget myself? look up!

The clouds are floating, the Milky Way is flowing.

 

乍一看，意思都译出来了。但是再仔细读读中文诗的第二、三、四、七句，有没有什么东西丢失了？

 

这几句中有只存在于中文里的文字游戏，word play，无法译到英文里。

 

第二句，秋字在心字上，组成愁字。

 

第三句，黄字可以拆成共和田两个字。

 

第四句，白字是日字头上加一撇，指太阳初升。

 

第七句，自字是目字头上加一撇，类似于白字，可以指抬目（升目）。

 

这些只是一种类型的例子，说明在一种语言中独一无二的东西是没法翻译到另一种语言里的。在莎剧中可以找到很多word play的例子，unique to English, 没法译到中文里来。
