If I may go a little bit further on this...

If we can assume that Christianity is the deep-rooted religion in the English-speaking world, it may help to understand why the westerners don't have anything near what Chinese call 灵性. In this framework, if a man receives great aspirations or comes to the understanding of something important, it is God who blessed and revealed it to him (thinking of Newton, Darwin, etc); not that he himself is so great. A man with 灵性 and somehow is better than others without would be blasphemy because God is no respecter of human.
