A person's next of kin (NoK) is that person's closest living blood relative or relatives. 活着的最亲近的人。 It helps determine rights regarding inheritance（继承权）in the legal system.

直系亲属：immediate family（口语）next of kin（法律定义）

Relative: 有血缘关系的亲属，如亲生母亲。Direct relative: 直系血亲。

Kin: 不一定有血缘关系的亲属，如继母，养母。

Next of Kin的法律定义：

• 在美国，有严格的定义，并且有按照严格先后次序确定的名单（服务于法律事务如遗产继承权的确定、法律官司的评判等）。
• 在英国，没有严格的定义。原则上任何人都可以指定为NoK。如在医院抢救，病人可指定任何一个他信任的人作为NoK并由他负责一应事务。
