我不是自我,不是

个人独特经历的总和,

民主地说,不过是

一个说话的人,

一个汽车旅馆的房间,

是你的,直到--

确切地说,句子结束。

语言事实上,

并不认为我重要,

即使用充满气魄的

发音方式强调 ---

比如我来

我看见我征服---

其它音节。

哦,这是个技术问题

无疑,对

如此这般的

处,哭,吾押韵

比补好

臭氧层漏洞

还艰难。

但最可怕的是不懈的坚持 ---

我、我、我---

某人气喘吁吁地爬坡,

脸红得像停车标志牌,

被医生吓坏了

或被某个他她它

在镜子里显得惊讶。

I is not ego, not the sum

of your unique experiences,

just, democratically,

whoever’s talking,

a kind of motel room,

yours till the end—

that is, of the sentence.

The language, actually,

doesn’t think I’s important,

stressing, even in

grandiose utterances—

e.g., I came

I saw I conquered—

the other syllables.

Oh, it’s a technical problem,

sure, the rhyme

on so-so-open

lie, cry, I

harder to stitch tight

than the ozone

hole in the sky.

But worst is its plodding insistence—

I, I, I—

somebody huffing uphill,

face red as a stop sign,

scared by a doctor

or some He She It

surprised in the mirror.
