It was a critique of 1920s American high society based in a love story.
Daisy Buchanan is torn between her arrogant, old money hu*****and, Tom Buchanan, and the new money millionaire, Jay Gat*****y. Each of the characters reflects the theme of the time period. Tom Buchanan is a millionaire concerned with his social status. Jay Gat*****y is also rich but has a questionable past. Daisy Buchanan is shallow and can't decide between true love with Gat*****y or maintaining appearances with her hu*****and. The whole story is set in the backdrop of the 1920s, which is portrayed as an aimless, bohemian era obsessed with materialism. That's why it was named "The Lost Generation"
