May I ask you a couple of questions about this sentence?

"This, however, was afterwards of use to me,"

1. I don't know its exact meaning, but I guess that the author says he benefited from this experience in his later life. Is it right?   

2. If "afterwards" is an adverb, Is " afterwards of use” grammatically correct in this sentence?
