First of all, I am not a language teacher. And I have not been formally trained in the English grammar. My understanding all comes from my feel of the language. I think the difference between translate and interpret is more subtle. To me, translate is not restricted to writing; it mostly refers to expressing the same sentence in a different form, often word for word, e.g., in a different language. On the other hand, interpretation is more about explaining the semantics or meaning of a sentence. For example, the same statement may get totally different interpretations from different people and they can all make sense. But the right translations will likely no vary by much.
