我认为how it was that 和口语的home come差不多。不是表示‘如何’的how，而是趋于‘为何’（why），表示原因。这里的He问自己为什么the impressions of winter could so completely describe the way he perceived himself。

我大学英文考了23分。所以我的解释可能77％是错的，哈
