I originally wrote "It was terrible to receive a lot of bad news in the mourning.."  but I don't know why I changed it to the way it's now.

Good catch, professor Fei!

- news is singular: a lot of news NOT many news
or in the original book "This was a lot of bad news ..."

- similar case: this/that information NOT these/those information
