Experiments indicate that children can begin their swimming lessons at a very early age. In a specially designed swimming pool in Los Angles, children were able to skillfully hold their breath under water even while still unable to walk (or learning to walk). Two-month old babies did not seem to hesitate to enter water. They adapted themselves to swimming so quickly that they could even pick up objects from the bottom of the pool. One of those little athletes' favorite games was the under-water tricycle competition. Tricycles were lined up on the bottom of this 7 foot deep pool. The children competed to see who would be the first one to reach the other side of the pool. Many children pedaled, but most would rather push or pull their tricycles. Some ran the entire length of the pool without getting above water to take a breath. Only time will reveal whether they will become Olympic champions. Meanwhile they should be inspirations to those of us who cannot swim 5 yards without catching their breath.
