Perhaps the most unusual building of the nineteenth century was The Crystal Palace, which was built in the Haide Park for the World Exposition in 1851.The Crystal Palace was different from all the other buildings in the world, because it was made of steel and glass. It was one of the tallest buildings by far and people from all over the world came to view it. A large number of goods were delivered to the Exihibition from many areas of the world. Also on display  was a great deal of machinery, among which  the most wonderful piece of work was NaySmith's Steam hammer. Even though travelling at the time was not as easy as it is now, steam boats carried thousands of visitors through (across) the English Channel from the continental shelf of Europe. Once arriving in England, they were brought to the Crystal Palace by train. The total number of visitors amounted to six millions and the profit from the exihibtion was used to build museums and universities. Later,"Crystal Palace" was moved to South London. Before burned down in 1936, it had been one of the most famous buildings in the world.
