Muffin from the bakery is fresher

Than the ones from grocery store. They taste better too because grocery store does mass production. There is a reason for it to be expensive.

I don't think eating can consume much money at all. You are lucky your wife is not into high end clothing, handbags, shoes and stuff. Most women do.
